He will forever bear the name “doubting Thomas.” But what must it have been like for him? Days earlier he had witnessed the crucifixion of his Lord and Master, the One in whom he had placed his hope and trust. Now his closest friends were going on and on about seeing the risen Jesus and he had missed it. Oh, how he wanted to see for himself the risen Christ! Now after a full week of hearing about it from the others, his opportunity comes. Jesus knew Thomas’ heart and exactly what Thomas needed to believe and He presented Himself to him.
As Jesus met with Thomas that day, He left words for us as well. “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” Between that day and ours an unbroken chain of faithful witnesses to the truth that Jesus is alive have been His hands, feet and side for us to know and believe and in believing, to be blessed.
Along with these witnesses we have the witness of His Word. John pens, “these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” As he did with Thomas, Jesus knows exactly what we need to believe and have the joy of knowing our Savior lives.
Another of his witnesses, Peter wrote these words to encourage those undergoing trial, “Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory.”
Though we have not yet seen Him face to face, we can know and witness to the joy of believing our Savior Lives! Who do we know that needs to hear this good news today? What a great time to be sharing this truth!
