I love the verses in John about the Light.
Have you ever stood under a light in a dark place? Under a street or security light and looked out into the darkness? You can not see past the edge—where the light ends and the darkness begins. You can only see what is lit. If you stand in the dark you can see things in the darkness (know and live in sin) and you can see into the light (the character of Jesus–of God himself). What a picture this gives us of salvation! We see the light of Jesus and are forced to chose—walk into the Light or die in our sin—in the darkness.
God does not know sin. The Bible refers to sin as death and God as life, sin as darkness and God as light.
“This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of the light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God”
Throughout the Bible the character, light, of God is reveled. To be known by God we must come into the light through Jesus Christ and the leading of the Holy Spirit. It is us that need to know God, God can not know us as sinners. We must die to self so that God can live in us. We must know him so that we will be known by him. We must walk into the light.
Yesterday, we visited a beloved WLBGC brother in the hospital, who is currently in the throes of a critical illness.
As we left the hospital, I verbalized to Chuck that illness really gets in the way of living!! That is, daily living as we know it: schedules; routines; goals; etc.
When “living” is narrowed down to a hospital room, with minimal furniture, one window, a change of clothes, and a stack of mail from home, you realize this is the new “normal”.
Immediately, upon having these sober thoughts, the Lord reminded me that His definition of living was very evident in that hospital room: many, many loved ones and friends expressing concern, compassionate and love to the afflicted one and his family. But even more profound – our brother was living out his testimony as he lay in that hospital bed … praising God and giving Him all the credit for the meaningful days at the office last week; carrying him through an important, long presentation; giving him the strength to lead his team; giving God the credit for the accomplishments of that day. AND sharing individual memories with each visitor; expressing appreciation for the meaning they brought to his life.
Yesterday, in a small hospital room, I witnessed what real living is about: living as a CROSSheir of Christ; thus, defeating the crosshair of satan.
