It's pretty cool to see how David still lives up to his promises to Jonathan even though Jonathan has long since been dead. That just really goes to show how much love David had for Jonathan, in life and in death.

In "grace and goodness," as you say? Yes! Our gracious God "deals with everyone this way."And add to that justice, mercy, love, and forgiveness. Thank God, this is the way he deals with all of us.

I'm still waiting for my dynasty and kingdom, though. Is that included? ;-)

Carlos Tellez recently preached a first person narrative sermon at Sunday Night Praise. He took on the character of Obed-Edom. The main idea of the sermon was that we must "approach God with the obedience that his holiness demands." Obed-Edom points out that in the initial attempt to bring the Ark to Jerusalem, the clear commands of God about how the Ark was to be moved were not followed. This was disconcerting, considering that Uzzah was a Levite belonging to the family that was charged with caring for the Ark. God clearly wants to bless his people, as Obed-Edom discovers; however, blessing and obedience are related. God graciously offers his very presence and goodness to his people...on His terms, not ours. God doesn't always treat us as we deserve (THANKFULLY!); however, in this instance God makes it unmistakably clear that although His desire is to be with His people and to bless them, He is a holy God whose grace is received as we follow His plan. How do we approach Him today? His plan for today is faith in and submission to JESUS CHRIST.

Go figure? That's just the point! I can't figure God out...He's God! I'm not!! Don't mess with Him.

My other reaction is, "Thank God for grace!" Without it, I'd be with Uzzah, who, by the way, disobeyed God when he touch the Arc of the Covenant and was punished exactly as God had said he (or anyone else) would be. I'm surprised that David didn't remember this instruction about moving this most sacred part of the Tabernacle.

Thank God for his amazing grace toward you and me today.

I like the way you visualize things! There are a lot of sensory words in this psalm. You can almost feel this psalm, if you try.

I like the imagery of God coming to the rescue. First, we've got David, who's in big, big trouble. He's out gunned and about to go down with the ship. With his last gasp of breath, he screams out to God and goes under -

4 The cords of death entangled me;
       the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me.

5 The cords of the grave [b] coiled around me;
       the snares of death confronted me.

6 In my distress I called to the LORD;
       I cried to my God for help.

And then, way off in heaven, we find God in his temple. I like to picture him sitting there talking with the angels, or maybe Jesus, when he's interupted by David's call for help.
Then, like Batman responding to the bat signal, he goes into action mode - the sky splits in half, the clouds wrap around him, light beams shooting every direction. It like something right out of a Narnia movie -

From his temple he heard my voice;
       my cry came before him, into his ears.

7 The earth trembled and quaked,
       and the foundations of the mountains shook;
       they trembled because he was angry.

8 Smoke rose from his nostrils;
       consuming fire came from his mouth,
       burning coals blazed out of it.

9 He parted the heavens and came down;
       dark clouds were under his feet.

11 He made darkness his covering, his canopy around him—
       the dark rain clouds of the sky.

12 Out of the brightness of his presence clouds advanced,
       with hailstones and bolts of lightning.

13 The LORD thundered from heaven;
       the voice of the Most High resounded.

The Lord thundered from heaven - I love that line! Like the shockwaves from 4th of July fireworks, BOOM, BOOM, BOOM! Here comes GOD!!!!

Not only did God rescue David, but I think just seeing what kind of power God wields made David supremely confident that he can't lose with God on his side. Just one glimpse of God supercharged David and totally changed his attitude. One minute, he's knocking on death's door, the next he's taking on anyone and everyone -

29 With your help I can advance against a troop [d] ;
       with my God I can scale a wall.
37 I pursued my enemies and overtook them;
       I did not turn back till they were destroyed
38 I crushed them so that they could not rise;
       they fell beneath my feet.
42 I beat them as fine as dust borne on the wind;
       I poured them out like mud in the streets.

Just getting a glimpse of the all powerful God changes everything. . . . . .

"He gives his king great victories; he shows unfailing kindness to his anounted, to David and his decendants forever. " v. 50

...the unfailing kindness part struck me. I can't forget that God is kind and He wants to help me.

The New Living renders the last part of verse two this way: "He is my shield, the strength of my salvation, and my stronghold." ...he is worthy of praise." (the end of verse three.)

Protection, strength, salvation, and security! I can't find any of those things in today's world; praise his holy name, I have them all in him.

Re: "He bends down to make me great," reminds me of Ps 116: 2 (NLT) "Because he bends down and listens, I will pray as long as I have breath!" I love the image of God bending down to hear my prayers. Wow!
